GE Appointment Costs

All GEs receive the following compensation, regardless of FTE:

Monthly Salary. The UO and GTFF establish minimum salary rates through collective bargaining. Rates are set for three levels of appointment, eligibilty for which are based on academic criteria. Units may elect to establish their own higher annual rates. Annual rates, in most units, are based on 1.0 FTE over a nine-month year. Monthly salary is calcuated as follows: (Annual Rate/9) x FTE. The following tables illustrate minimum gross monthly salaries by FTE for 2014-15 and 2015-16, 2016-17 and recent years' minimum gross annual rates.

Full Time Equivalency (FTE)

For GEs, 1.0 FTE is equivalent to a maximum of 438 hours per term. GEs are appointed .20-.49 FTE. GEs may not work more than 20 hours/week during the academic year (inclusive of all employment at the University). During summer term, GEs may be appointed up to 1.0 FTE if they meet required criteria. During the academic year, any exceptions to the .49 FTE limit must be approved by the Dean of the Graduate School; few are granted.

To determine the maximum number of hours per term a GE can be expected to work, multiply the position's actual FTE by 438. For example, .49 x 438= 215. Thus, a GE  appointed at .49 FTE can be expected to work a maximum of 215 hours. Here are some common FTE-to-hours calculations:

FTE Max. Hours per Term Avg. Hours per Week*
0.20 88 8
0.25 110 10
0.30 131 12
0.35 153 14
0.40 175 16
0.45 197 18
0.49 215 19
*Based on an 11-week term.
Calculation: 438 x FTE= Hours per Term

Tuition Remission. GEs receive a remission of tuition for up to 16 credits per term (and they must be enrolled for a minimum of 9 credits toward their degree each term in which they are appointed as a GE).   Please note:

  • GE tuition is always charged at the resident rate but does vary according to the student's major. See the BRP website for current tuition rates.
  • The tuition remission is applied fully, regardless of major.
  • Self-support courses are not covered by the GE tuition remission unless they are required by the graduate degree program.

Mandatory Fee Subsidy. All students are assessed mandatory fees. In fall, winter, and spring, GEs are responsible, each quarter, for $61 of these fees and the hiring unit is responsible for the remainder. In 2015-16, fees are $594.50 per term. In 2016-17, fees are 617.25 per term.During the summer, GEs are responsible for 100% of fees if they choose to enroll (summer 2015 fees were $403.75).

Health Insurance Access and Premium Coverage. GEs have access to GE-specific insurance. Hiring units are charged a single rate, derived from a weighted average of previous year's enrollment in the various insurance coverage categories (single, with partner/spouse, with child(ren), with family). The single rate, which is assessed per term, is as follows:

Fall, winter and spring 2014-15 $1,302
Summer  2015 $1,377
Fall, winter and spring 2015-16 $1,326
Summer 2016 $1,407
Fall, winter and spring 2016-17 $1,506
Summer 2017 $1,654
Fall, winter, and spring 2017-18 TBA
