Program Emphasis: The Russian and East European Studies center (REESC) is devoted to the study of the peoples living in the eastern third of Europe, throughout the northern steppes of Central Asia, and across Siberia to the Pacific Ocean. Unlike many area studies programs, REESC is devoted to literary and artistic analysis as well as to social scientific study of the region. Students in the master's program combine specialized work in a concentration (literature, history, linguistics, geography, anthropology, sociology, political science) with language study and interdisciplinary coursework connected to the Russian, former Soviet Eurasian, and/or Slavic cultural area. Students in other M.A. and Ph.D. programs at the university may apply for simultaneous certification in Russian and East European Studies through the Graduate Certificate program (interested students should contact the REESC director). The Center currently offers four years of Russian language training, plus advanced topical courses. For other regional languages, students will need to obtain skills elsewhere, typically over the summer. In addition to basic training, the Center brings together students and faculty members with mutual interests to share works-in-progress and helps students plan their curricula.

Program Emphasis: General Information: The Interdisciplinary Studies: Individualized Program (IS:IP) is a flexible but academically rigorous master's degree program. Working within established guidelines, students plan a course of study specifically designed to explore their interests and work with a faculty committee to pursue and complete their program. Success relies upon the individual's initiative and self-discipline and the commitment of the student's master's committee.
Admission to the IS:IP program is selective; the program is intended to meet the needs of students who have specific, well-articulated goals that cannot be reached through established departmental master's degree programs. Students may select course work from three departments in the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS), from three professional schools, or from a combination of professional schools and CAS departments. Although considerable flexibility is allowed in the design of a program, in all cases, the curriculum must be composed of existing courses from three different departments that grant the master's degree.
A studentss IS:IP program may not substantially duplicate an already established departmental masterss degree program, nor should the IS:IP be considered an alternate method of pursuing a program to which a student has already been denied admission.
