Oral Defense Waiver of Attendance

This is the format for the letter submitted by a member of your doctoral committee who cannot attend the oral defense (or who will attend remotely), but who will read the dissertation.

This letter must be submitted along with the Certificate of Completion form. The certificate is forwarded directly to your chair after you have applied for the oral defense. The certificate must be signed after your defense (if concluded successfully) and then returned to the Graduate School no more than two weeks (or by the official deadline if sooner) after the date of the defense. Staple the waiver letter to the certificate.

The letter should be typed and signed by the faculty person and addressed to:

  • Janet Woodruff-Borden, Dean
    Graduate School
    University of Oregon


OR, alternatively, the faculty member can send an email to gradsch@uoregon.edu that includes the language below.


Letter Language :

  • This is to certify that I have read the dissertation of (name of candidate), certify its acceptability to meet requirements for the doctoral degree, and recommend the candidate for graduation.
