Graduate School Recruitment Fund

The University of Oregon Graduate School has funds available to support the efforts of faculty and staff in UO graduate programs to recruit PhD students. The goal of these funds is to help our graduate departments and programs reach their recruiting goals by increasing the resources available to reach prospective and admitted students. Departments can request funds to support campus visits and/or offer top-off funds.

Fund requests will be considered and awarded on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. Multiple applications from individual departments will be considered, but there will be an attempt to maximize the impact of the awards by distributing them across as many programs as possible. The Graduate School will inform you of the decision within 3 business days from application submission, if not sooner.

Two options are available:

  • Campus visits by prospective PhD students who are admitted or coming to campus for admission interviews. These funds will provide up to $500 per student. Please file one request for each student to be supported and indicate below if student is part of a group campus visit request.
  • Top-off awards that can be used to provide one-time support for new PhD students during their first year of study. In this case, programs can ask the Graduate School for an award of $2,000 to individual students in order to strengthen their funding offer.

For campus visits, award money will be distributed directly to departments/programs after the visit occurs and travel expense documentation has been forwarded to Lisa Howard (  For top-off funding, award money will be issued only after confirmation of the applicant’s admission acceptance, which must be forwarded to Lisa by May 1, 2018. If admission and/or the award is declined, departments should notify the Graduate School as soon as possible. Committed funds will be held only until May 1, 2018.   Top-off funds will be disbursed directly to the student by the Graduate School.
