Overview

Made possible by a generous donation of Mr. Lorry I. Lokey, the Lokey Doctoral Science Fellowships support students during their final year of doctoral study to allow them to focus on their research endeavors and to prepare for the next steps in their academic career. We anticipate awarding as many as 3 Lokey Doctoral Science Fellowships this year. Students in programs that fall into one of the following NSF research areas are eligible for consideration: 

  • Biological Sciences
  • Computer and Information Science and Engineering
  • Education and Human Resources
  • Engineering
  • Environmental Research and Education
  • Geosciences
  • Mathematical and Physical Sciences
  • Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences

Award Details

  • Fall, Winter, and Spring Research GE position, including GE salary at home department’s graduate employee rate, paid on the same monthly schedule as a regular GE appointment
  • Graduate employee remission (tuition, fee subsidy, insurance) 
  • $6,000 supplemental award

Eligibility and Criteria

To be eligible, doctoral students must be advanced to candidacy and have their dissertation committee on file with the Division of Graduate Studies by the end of the term Spring 2023 and will be expected to complete their doctoral degree in the terms of Winter, Spring, or Summer 2024.

In the case that a student who has not advanced to candidacy is selected to receive the award, they will officially receive the award only if they advance to candidacy by the end of Spring 2023.

Recipients must register for at least 9 dissertation credits during each term of the fellowship. 


Selection Process and Timeline

  • Applications will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the Graduate Council.
  • Fellowship decisions will be made by early May. 
  • The award will be disbursed to your student billing account at the beginning of Fall 2023. If the fellowship provides for funding over multiple terms, the award may be disbursed in equal installments in Fall 2023, Winter 2024, and Spring 2024 as needed.

Other Conditions

Dissertation Research Fellowships may not be held concurrently with other forms of public or institutional support.
