Program Description

The College of Arts and Sciences history graduate program is a community of scholars pursuing the study of a wide range of geographical areas and topics.

The University of Oregon supports the study of history through an array of related interdisciplinary programs and a research library of more than two million volumes, along with many other resources.

The history department has an outstanding graduate faculty. The faculty is large enough to have a wide array of geographical and thematic specialties, but small enough to provide close working relationships between faculty and graduate students, as well as a collegial environment.

The MA program provides students and their faculty advisors with maximum flexibility in designing fields of study. Many MA students choose to continue their studies in the PhD program, while others have earnt admission into some of the most prestigious history programs in North America including:

  • Princeton University
  • University of California, Berkeley
  • University of Chicago
  • University of Toronto
  • University of California, Santa Barbara

Program Description

The College of Arts and Sciences history graduate program is a community of scholars pursuing the study of a wide range of geographical areas and topics.

The University of Oregon supports the study of history through an array of related interdisciplinary programs and a research library of more than two million volumes, along with many other resources.

The history department has an outstanding graduate faculty. The faculty is large enough to have a wide array of geographical and thematic specialties, but small enough to provide close working relationships between faculty and graduate students, as well as a collegial environment.

The PhD program combines an emphasis on research and teaching designed to equip students to compete successfully for faculty positions. Students can engage with specific focal fields in:

  • North American West/ Borderlands
  • Indigenous People/Native Americans
  • Environmental history
  • African American/African history
  • History of Women/Gender/Sexuality
  • Asia (with particular strengths in the history of China and Japan)
  • Latin America
  • Transnational history

Additionally, the department has strengths in the history of Russia, science and the social sciences, and intellectual history.

Most doctoral students come to UO with a master’s degree however, a small number of highly qualified students with bachelor’s degrees may be admitted to the PhD program.
