Hiring Options for Term Before Admission

The following options are available to employ/support graduate students the term before the student's intended start term. If you are not sure which category is applicable, contact Talent Acquisition at talent@uoregon.edu with a description of the duties/activities.

Undergraduate-level work

Student Worker

Work must not be graduate-level work, i.e., the type of work that either an undergraduate or a graduate student could typically perform

No approval from the Division is needed. See HR’s Hiring Students for more info. Contact Talent Acquisition at talent@uoregon.edu for approval to pay above $18/hour.

Graduate-level work below the minimum GE FTE for the term

Student Worker

Total hours must not exceed (or come close to) the minimum hours for the term

Graduate-level work above a .20 FTE for the term

Graduate Employee

  • Admission term must be changed to the term of the GE appointment
  • Student must register for a minimum of 1 credits (first term registration requirement)
  • Hiring unit will be charged for tuition, insurance, fees pursuant to the CBA

Admission Term Change: Follow steps outlined in the Admissions Handbook (linked on your Slate Homepage) to process as a (backwards) deferral. 

GE Hiring:

Pre-GE Lab Orientation

Stipend paid as an award

Cannot be work. Example activities include:

-Reading and discussing articles

-Participating in lab meetings

-Attending presentations

-Watching experiments

-Learning how to use equipment

Pay via RAR to student billing. Must note on RAR applicable summer term and note situation (i.e. “student is enrolled for fall 2024, please disburse summer 2024”)
