
Grad Student Workshop Series
This series is designed for both new and continuing graduate students, for master's as well as doctoral students. Sign up for the events that interest you, and invite other grad students to join you.
FALL 2009 WORKSHOPS: Most of these are Fridays at noon in the EMU. Bring your lunch and a pen for notes. The finalized schedule will be emailed to all enrolled graduate students at the start of fall term. To reserve a seat, send an e-mail to gradgtf@uoregon.edu with “RSVP” in the subject line. Please include the event(s) you will be attending, your major, level (doctoral or master’s), and year, and any special accommodations you need. Here are the topics we're planning for this fall:
- Rehearsals for Life ~ Tuesday, Oct 13 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. ~ EMU Ben Linder Room
A unique opportunity to connect with other students and serve the larger graduate student population. Feeling your creativity stifled by an onslaught of coursework, writing and teaching, not to mention your friendships and relationships? Here is an opportunity to utilize your creative impulses and contribute in innovative ways to your community. “Rehearsals for Life” is a ground breaking new project of the UO Graduate School, the Center on Diversity and Community (CoDaC) and the Office of Student Life. Facilitated by Abigail Leeder, Department of Student Life, students will develop interactive presentations for their peers on issues facing graduate students today. Come to this informational session and find out how you can be involved.

Amy Nuetzman, Assistant Director of University Teaching and Learning Center, will provide tools and strategies to help you management your time effectively.
- Speed Reading for Grad Students ~ Friday, Oct 23 Noon to 1:20 p.m. ~ EMU Walnut Room
Back by popular demand! Don’t miss these useful tips on how to read faster and improve your concentration. Presented by Amy Nuetzman, Assistant Director of University Teaching and Learning Center.
- Thesis and Dissertation Writing ~ SATURDAY, Oct 24 10:00 a.m. to Noon ~ McKenzie Hall Rom 240A<paragraph>Marian Friestad and Sandi Morgen, Associate Deans of the Graduate School, lead a comprehensive workshop on managing your time and setting deadlines, writer's block, budgeting, writing the proposal and literature review, preparing for the oral defense, and maintaining a working relationship with your advisor. Relevant UO Graduate School policies will also be covered. Held in fall and spring terms.
- International Student Panel Discussion ~ Friday, Oct 30 Noon to 1:20 p.m. ~ EMU Walnut Room
Facilitated by staff of International Affairs and the Graduate School, this is a great opportunity for new and continuing international students to share their experiences and ideas about how to be successful in graduate school at the UO. The panel will consist of 3-4 experienced international graduate students.
- Finding and Organizing Information ~ Friday, Nov 6 Noon to 1:20 p.m. ~ EMU Walnut Room
Katy Lenn, UO Libraries, will discuss UO library resources (e.g., journal databases, primary resources) and briefly introduce EndNote and Zotero bibliographic software programs used for organizing your search results and sources. Bring your laptop to follow along!
- Giving Effective and Engaging Digital Presentations ~ Friday, Nov 13 Noon to 1:20 p.m. ~ EMU Ben Linder Room
We all know it takes more than a flashy PowerPoint to give an effective presentation but what are the keys to a good presentation? Robert Voelker-Morris, Teaching Effectiveness Program, will discuss how to put together and give an effective, engaging and interesting presentation.

This workshop will focus on techniques to overcome stage fright and anxiety, tips for preparation and other ways to improve your public speaking skills. You will learn about effective nonverbal communication and how to speak confidently and engage your audience.
