Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies
Graduate School :: University of Oregon

Graduate students at the University of Oregon may be eligible for a Jesse M. Bell Memorial Fund short term loan of up to $500. Created in 1991, this loan is for graduate students of high scholastic standing in pursuits of their graduate studies. The loan is to assist with educational and/or research expenses associated with the graduate student’s advance degree. Often students use the money loaned for personal expenses, conference/research-related costs or job search-related expenses. To qualify students must be currently enrolled in a graduate program; have no incomplete grades in core course work, except terminal project, thesis or dissertation work; have made timely progress; maintain a high GPA; and can demonstrate a financial need to enable them to pursue their graduate studies. Students are not eligible for a Jesse M. Bell short term loan if they have other outstanding short term loans, except a $300 general short term loan, or are a staff member. Loan approvals are subject to availability of funds. To apply download an application from the link above and submit it to the Graduate School - 125 Chapman Hall. [17 Nov 2009]

Administrator Graduate Student Dinner

On November 5th the Graduate School, the Graduate School Student Advisory Board, the Alliance of Graduate Students for Diversity, and the UO Women in Graduate Science organization hosted what we are now envisioning as an annual dinner bringing together University of Oregon institutional leaders and graduate student leaders. Over 40 students from these three groups met informally and then over dinner with twelve institutional leaders, including President Richard Lariviere, Provost Jim Bean, Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity Charles Martinez, Vice President for Student Affairs Robin Holmes, and others. The goals of the dinner included celebrating and making more visible the outstanding work of graduate student leaders who are building organizations that advocate for graduate students and graduate education and creating a forum for informal exchange between institutional leaders and graduate students about key issues affecting graduate education at the UO. [10 Nov 2009]

“I had the opportunity to speak with the President, the Vice-provosts and other members of the administration, who gave me tips and advice on how to grow in our own work and our commitment to addressing the needs of students from under-represented groups on campus. This dinner also provided the opportunity for us to understand their positions, constraints, and goals --something that will serve us well as we plan for our own organization's future. For me, this was the first step in building a stronger community of support, two-way communication and problem solving between grad students and the University.”

“I met the Provost Jim Beam, who I definitely would not have met in another setting. It was great to get an insider’s perspective, and it was also nice to get to know some of the other individuals from the other graduate student organizations. I would describe is as an opportunity for alternative perspectives to be shared across graduate students and between graduate students and administrators.”
