GTF (Graduate Teaching Fellowship) is the term used at the UO for teaching, research, and administrative assistantships. To be eligible to apply for a GTF, you must be a regularly admitted Master's or Doctoral student.
Academic departments have GTF positions that are open only to students within that specific department and are posted only in that department. Please contact the academic department to which you have been admitted for departmental GTF information.
The Graduate School also posts administrative GTF openings. See Current GTF Openings.
FTE Guidelines
- FTE (full-time equivalency) corresponds to the total workload for a GTF per term.
- A full-time (1.0 FTE or 40 hours per week) employee works 438 hours per term. Students may not be employed for more than .49 FTE.
- To determine the hours required per term for a particular GTF position, multiply the advertised FTE by 438.
- GTFs with an appointment equal to or greater than .20 FTE will receive a tuition waiver for up to 16 credit hours per term.
- During the 2008-2009 academic year, the tuition waiver is valued at $3,510 per term for residents and $5,184 per term for non-residents.
- GTFs are assessed non-instructional fees set by the Oregon University System (OUS) at $538 per term for 2008-2009, of which the university pays $388.
- The student is responsible for the balance as stipulated in the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Fees are subject to change without additional notice.
GTF Application
Some hiring units require applicants to submit the Graduate Teaching Fellowship Application.
University of Oregon policy allows graduate students to hold a GTF appointment and also work as a student employee at the University of Oregon or other institutions within the Oregon University System (including Oregon State University, Portland State University, Western Oregon State College, Southern Oregon State College, and Eastern Oregon State College). However, it is the policy of the University that appointment levels not exceed a total of .49 FTE employment, counting both GTF and student hours. This policy acknowledges that students are students first and foremost; as such they have primary responsibilities in their courses and academic programs.
